Elvis Presley (1935-1977)

Introduction

Elvis Presley, as know as the "King of Rock 'n' Roll", was born on January 8, 1935 in Mississippi. He was one of the most significant singers in the United States in 20th century. He was successful in many area including pop, blues, and gospel. His musics influenced many people, especially teenagers during that period. He was the best-selling solo artist in the history of recording music.

Youth

Elvis Presley's parents gave him a guitar for his 11th birthday. He had a twin brother, Jessie Garon, had left his family to grow up alone. In 1953, at age of 18, he used his own money to pay four dollars for record two songs named "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin."

Career

Elvis Presley started his career at Sun Record in 1954. Then in 1955, he had contract with RCA, Victor. He recorded his first song for new his new label including "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1955. In 1956, He was struck by Big Mama Thornton's song "Hound Dog" and he recorded this song. His version was the best-know version for this song, also "Hound Dog" was his best-selling song. He made his third and final appearance "Toast of the Town" in 1957. Elvis Presley had his own style in  music, his music influenced world and popular culture.

Elvis Presley has forced on the movies in 1956. His first movie, "Love Me Tender", had premiered at the Paramount Theater in New York City. He had 33 successful films including to Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, G.I.Blues and Viva Las Vegas.

In 1958, he served in the US army. He served 18 mouths of active military duty in Germany. In 1960, he backed from the U.S. Army, his first post-Army recording session.

Elvis Presley died in Graceland on August 19, 1977.


Accomplishment

Elvis Presley had total of more than 150 of gold, platinum, or multi-platinum albums. He was the best-selling solo artist in the history of recording music. He has sold more than one billions records, more than any other artists. He was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1896, Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998, and Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001. At age 36, he received the Germany Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1970, his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of Nation. In 1993, Elvis Presley's image appeared on the postage stamp of the U.S.

Relationship to Today

Elvis Presley wasn't the first singers of Rock 'n' Roll, but he created his own Rock 'n' Roll style. He spread Rock 'n' Roll music across country and made it popular to a wide audience, especially teenagers. He was popular with different types of people for different reasons. He has a huge number of fans even in today. In 2010, his fans celebrated for his 75th birthday at Graceland Mansion in Memphis, Tennessee.  Many popular singers treat Elvis Presley as their idol, they hear his music when they were young. So Elvis influences not only 1950s' music culture, but also today's.
